Pirate Ship I
A watercolour sketch of La Grande Hermine—the beloved “Pirate Ship” that sat in Jordan Harbour along the QEW for decades, greeting travellers on the drive between Toronto and Niagara Falls. A replica of one of Jacques Cartier’s 16th-century ships, its rusted hull and tilted masts became an unmistakable landmark before the ship was finally dismantled and removed. This piece captures a bit of Niagara road-trip nostalgia for anyone who grew up spotting it out the car window.
This is the first in a series of three sketches of the ship.
